Simple Start-Upsfor SOLIDSequencing

Techniques to invigorate your swing

by Dr. David A. Berv

Many people ask me how to best prepare their body for the golf season.

My response usually rests on a golfer’s individual needs. Some have gained weight, while others have sustained injury or had surgery. Other players have flexibility issues or just need to re-establish the feel of proper body sequencing and mechanics.

However, there are some universal recommendations that can benefit all levels of golfers regardless of their unique issues. Furthermore, to address multiple levels and needs, my recommendations aim to keep it simple and effective for both compliance and applicability to golf-specific motions and postures. The following practical tips are what I suggest for preseason tune-ups, and for a productive and enjoyable golf season.

A strong sense of balance will promote a fluid and efficient swing. Balancing problems on the right or left side can lead to various swing faults. Test your sense of balance by standing on one leg, with your eyes open, then closed. You will find that it is harder to maintain stability on one side.

Improving your balance is easy. While on the phone, in line at the store, or in between exercise sets at the gym, practice one-legged balancing (eyes open and closed) for quick 5 to 10 second bursts. On the course, periodically concentrate on balancing on your more problematic side while waiting for others to play. The results can be realized immediately and you might just impress your friends!
